Did you know scientists refer to jellyfish as a Medusa? You do now and you would understand why if you read the book!
Although this book is in the Children's Literature category of this blog, and it's advertised as suitable for age 8+ I would be lying if I didn't mention that this is up there with my favourite books I've read this year. I learnt things (so many things), I was hooked, I enjoyed the interactive elements, it made me think, and it touched my emotions also.
Not only are we taught about the life of various sea creatures, insects, and plants, but also humans' impact on the planet, plus some Greek mythology as a bonus!
The tone is friendly and conversational but endlessly informative. Although the topics are at times complex, the reader is never talked down to but instead explained to. Furthermore, this book can age with the reader, there are sections for younger children as well as more detailed elaborations that can be read again on another read-through.
This book takes readers across the globe, under the sea and even into another language - there was a paragraph in German, not sure why, but luckily I knew enough to understand it! Science, illustrations, and puzzles all in one book - yes please!
Overall I know this book will inspire curiosity and hopefully reduce fear and increase understanding of jellyfish and other crazy sea creatures! My personal favourite? (I know you're wondering) Obviously, the Fried Egg Jellyfish!
