Becca Reviews: The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley

Well, where to start with this one. I honestly barely feel qualified to review this as I don't know what happened.

I wonder if listening on audiobook ruined this for me as I found it incredibly hard to follow. (P.s. this is definitely me giving the book an out as I listen to audiobook's every day and never struggle to follow them...) The various timelines seemed to jump around unclearly and without adding to the plot, I couldn't follow the characters at all, and I didn't connect with the characters I did understand.

Coincidentally, the story is set in Dorset, I have recently moved to the Devon/Dorset border so I was like, cool okay, nice bit of context to start off with. Unfortunately, that's pretty much where my positive feelings ended. So, the synopsis...someone's bull is killed, a rich woman owns a hotel, lots of the locals work there, the owner was a very weird and manipulative as a child, with creepy creepy evil brothers, and an even creepier grandfather. There are some richy rich's and some normal folk who don't want the area turned into a holiday location for more richy rich's. There are some twists and turns that I couldn't keep up with.

There were a fair few characters in this plot but I felt as though there was 1000. Also, they all had names, plus nicknames, and some were hiding their identity. It was all too much, too many twists, ulterior motives, old connections/romances, and then chuck in some old diary entries for good measure.

I read Foley's The Paris Apartment and The Guest List, and enjoyed them both. I wouldn't say either were great works of literature but they both had great and surprising twists and characters that I could believe and follow along with.

I'm almost sure that 2 stars is unfair from me, but I am confident that even at best I would only give it 3 stars. I really couldn't even tell you the main conceit, something to do with birds...?

Anyway, sorry, read this or don't, I may as well have not.
